Overview
Ironworkers use steel and cable reinforcing in concrete construction; erect steel skeletons for buildings, window walls and curtain exteriors; rig heavy machinery and welding related to the construction of large commercial facilities such as stadiums, dams, high rises and bridges.
Employment Outlook
Initially Apprentices earn 50-55% of the Journeyman hourly wage. As the apprentice successfully completes the required coursework and on-the-job training, he/she will receive hourly increases throughout the training period. Upon successful completion of meeting the requirements to obtain their Journeyman card, apprentices then move to that status and earn the full Journeyman wage.
Employment demand is high and expected to remain so for the foreseeable future in construction.
